Hagal's Ætt in the Elder Futhark Runes
Each Ætt brings about its own nature and energy. Hagal’s Ætt, which relate to the second grouping of eight runes of the Elder Futhark Runes, is about nurturing and pertains to the root of destruction.
- Hagal's Ætt begins with Hagalaz depicting hail and thereby being indoors protected from the elements.
- The Second is Nauthiz, which relates to the circumstances of Hagalaz and the need for protection.
- The third, Isa, once again resonates with the first two runes as we see the barren, frozen time of winter.
- The fourth, Jera, then shows the time of harvest and thereby also you reach personal growth.
- The next pair, Eihwaz and Perthro, then work with your restrictions. Eihwaz works with your natural restrictions within your outlook and circumstance, whereas Perthro offers warnings of not being able to heed the restrictions which are there to guide.

Hagalaz is an irreversible rune and resembles hail. Within this rune we find much potential for evolution and transition, but as with hail, it reminds you to venture within for the most desired outcomes. Hagalaz also suggests a time to protect yourself against destructive elements. Bear in mind that as with hail, this too will pass.

Nauthiz (now'-diz) "N"
Nauthiz is irreversible and pertains to Need. This need encapsulates physical, mental and spiritual needs. Nauthiz is one of three runes pertaining to winter and thereby expresses a constrained need. However, it is important to understand that Nauthiz thereby reminds you of your ability to liberate yourself from these circumstances. Patience is in order to 'ride out' the situation and the end results will bring about much benefit and inner strength. Be cautious.
Nauthiz reminds you that you have all you need in order to transition from your circumstance, you 'need' only to realize the current opportunities and prevent yourself from feeling 'needy'.
Isa (ee'-suh) "Ee or ea"
Isa is irreversible and pertains to Ice. Isa is the third rune associated with winter. As with anything frozen, we can relate to the state of being frozen within our circumstance. However, as Isa is irreversible, you can see that this may either be in a positive or destructive manner.
The positive aspect can relate to a calming, reflective state of self and thereby a protective measure against destruction. The destructive aspect could therefore relate to being immobile and not gaining the momentum to venture further.

Jera (yeer'-uh) "Y"
Jera is irreversible and pertains to Harvest. Jera, being the 12th Rune of the Elder Futhark Runes, is well placed. Consider the harvest being every 12 months and thereby bringing about great change. That which you sow, you will reap. Thereby, causality of your actions is now brought to mind.
Harvest, benefits, consequences, fertility, reaping, returns, causality, expansion, growth, patience, profit, movement.
Eihwaz (i'-vaz) long "I"
The Yew Tree, Eihwaz, is irreversible and pertains a and thereby has a rather profound meaning. Once again, as this rune is irreversible, care ought be taken with interpreting. Eihwaz relates to that which has passed and the opportunities for regeneration. It's that feeling of "Well, shit happens, so suck it up and move on!"
We are reborn daily, the you that you perceive now is a total new person from who you were five, ten or twenty years ago. Parts of that prior you still exists, but you are no longer that person. Eihwaz is a reminder that change is inevitable, a part of you must 'die' in order for you to grow.

Reversed, Perthro pertains to 'your luck running out. You may find yourself living in a delusional state or a self-built fantasy nearing megalomania. Now is the time to reevaluate your circumstances as perhaps you are a tad 'out of touch'.
This rune may also be indicating that things are hidden from you and you do not have a clear vision of what is transpiring. Also you could well be reminded that things should have been left alone and you may well have opened Pandora's Box.
Now would be a great time to muster all your energy and focus on your present moment. What you do today will make all the difference, whereas just stressing about the past or future will result in failure.

Algiz (al'-giz) "Z"
Probably one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful rune, Algiz represents the Elk and thereby serves as a rune of protection. Similar to the antler of the elk, Algiz acts as a rune of personal protection. However, dissimilar to the elk, Algiz protects us on every level, physically, mentally and spiritually. Thereby, it is safe to ascertain that Algiz is also a wonderful rune to use during meditation, prayer and connecting to the Divine.
Once again, Algiz warns that as with the nature of the elk, you find yourself in surrounding danger and ought be alert and aware. By seeing Algiz as a connector, we assert ourselves to wisdom and clarity that will guide us and protect us from harmful elements.

Algiz (al'-giz) "Z" Reversed
You can identify the meaning of the reversed Algiz as per an elk separated from his herd. He may feel unprotected, exposed, blind sighted and inevitably rather fearful. The reversed Algiz warns us of impeding dangers in our surroundings, untrustworthy friends or companions and warns us to seek protection from our surroundings.
However, this reversal can also relate to a convoluted idea of being totally self-reliant or one who may feel he needs no protection or help from others. The reversed Algiz is a sure means to identify when your ego is surpassing your inner self and warns you to reconsider the situation at hand.

Irreversible Sowulo, the last of Hagal’s Ætt in the Elder Futhark Runes, represents the energizing, regenerating, heating Sun. As per the Tarot card, The Sun XIX, Sowulo is a ruin of great victory, confidence, optimism and success.
As the Moon reflects the Sun's energy, hereto do we find ourselves being able to capture the Sun's vitality and reflect that light and insight in a means to move forward valiantly.
