Two-card reading using a Shadow Card

Two-card reading using a Shadow Card

Today we explore a Two-card reading using a Shadow Card as an outcome and for this, you will be exploring the cards of the  Thoth Tarot Deck.

This reading is most often used when the time is of the essence and as one can ascertain, things are normally transpiring at a serious rate in order for time to be the deciding factor in your reading. This too suggests that more often than not, one can feel rather stressed in such cases.

Understandably then you just want to get to the crux of the matter. What is going on? What do you need to know to achieve my full potential and get back on track?  So as time is pressing, you are therefore only really needing a Two-card reading using a Shadow Card.

Two-card reading using a Shadow Card

Combination of The Tower and The Universe Thoth Tarot Deck. Two-card reading using a Shadow Card

For this example, I have shuffled my question into my Thoth Tarot Deck and have drawn The Tower as my Situation (no surprise there) and The Universe from the Shadow position to reveal my Outcome and Restitution. The ‘Shadow position’ of which I speak, for those who have not yet worked with Shadow cards, refers to the card taken from the bottom of the deck.

First and foremost impression of both cards together.

Now that you can see the two cards alongside each other, you can look at first impressions. The very first impression is that these are both Trump cards, or Major Arcana cards. Trumps deal not only with my situation but also and more importantly, they relate to the spiritual side of your being, the divine world of emanation.

The Situation at hand.

At first glance, the Tower can be misconstrued as a rather disconcerting card. However, that is the beauty of Tarot right there. Tarot is an analogy to life and reminds us that things are not always as they seem at first glance, and the Tower especially shows this.

The Tower is explaining that sure, things may have seemed to have crumbled and fallen, but now there are no more hidden subterfuges and no more baggage, just freedom and endless opportunity. How wonderful is that!

One of my favorite authors, Lon Milo Duquette, in his book Understanding Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot explains this card as the first phase of a construction site in which bulldozers are clearing the land for the erection of a magnificent building. At some point in time, we all need to strip ourselves bare of what doesn’t work in order to create something of ourselves.

Kabbalistic approach

If we look toward the Kabbalah, we can see how the Tower is seen linking Hod to Netzach – the lowest sphere of Severity to the lowest sphere of Mercy – reminding us to analyze our situation, find strength (Hod) in the truth of the matter, and thereby continue with Victory (Netzach).  As the Tower is ruled by Mars (Geburah), we can understand that it becomes essential for us to cut away all misgivings, all impurities and whatever baggage is holding us back.

Which again brings us to our initial feel of the reading. The Trumps relate to the spiritual side of our essence. So if the Tower refers to any form of what all sacred writings have narrowed down to the “Seven deadly sins”, then it’s rather simple. Then a quick and simple method to safeguard your situation is to ask yourself:

  • Are you having health issues, training or trying to get into shape? The Tower could well be showing gluttony, sloth, envy…
  • Are you wanting to succeed, get a promotion? Maybe sloth, laziness, not performing at your peak…What about greed? Anger?
  • Wanting a relationship? How does anger play a role? Lust? Greed? Envy?

These seven human glitches are probably the root cause of most cases of denial in our ‘modern-day’ lifestyles, yet they are more than capable of bringing down the largest tower in biblical proportions.

The conclusion of the card.

In a nutshell, then, you can see two choices being laid out by the Tower card – look at your situation whole-heartedly, meditate and analyze your situation. You are facing two choices:

1 Choose the dove, release all that is holding you back, take your olive leaf and move on, find the higher ground.

2. Choose to hold onto the serpent, your personal Abraxas, that which you know is not working for you and prepare to be crumbled by the aftermath of your own choices.

As The Tower refers to the Hebrew letter Pē, which refers to mouth, it resonates with me. So often one is so hasty to utter words… our mouths manifest wonders, and if we don’t place a guard there, we can easily create our own downfall. However, if we can place intention to that which we speak, we can move mountains, create a beautiful Universe.

The Shadow Card

We can then look to the “Shadow card”, which in this specific reading is then The Universe XXI Trump.

First Impression.

The Universe depicts the perfect ‘shadow side’ to our crumbling Tower and identifies that that needs to be seen. That outcome hasn’t had any spotlight on it or hasn’t come to light.

So having the Universe as the unseen factor, the possible outcome from the crumbling Tower is more than just relieving, but also inspiring.

The Outcome Card.

So having learned the positive lessons from the Tower, you get to move toward the Universe. This in itself is quite the revelation as The Universe is the exact manifestation of the Fool. When the fool started his journey, it was this exact point to which he was heading. This was the unknown ‘destiny’. You can well see how understanding and heeding the advice of the Tower has brought you directly to The Universe.

First Impression of the card.

Relief! Rewarding! Freedom to move and start creating. Being the center of universal attention!

Kabbalistic Outcome

The Universe is ruled by Saturn which is the only planet found in the first ternary of the Tree of Life. Ironically, The Universe is also seen as the last path linking the earth to the moon. What does this actually mean and why is it important. Well, Saturn is the first planet that the fool makes contact with and finds his ‘Understanding’.

However, the path of the Universe is that which links earth to the Moon, thereby we can see how this understanding is then translated to earth as the fool completes his journey.  So too then we see how the fool is complemented by the Universe and our original outlooks, our intuition of being the center of the universe, is then so accurate.

Outlook and conclusion.

Very often it is important to say ‘no’. It is essential to our own personal evolution as humans, as people, to do some serious introspection and see what it is that needs be stripped, or identify that which is no longer ontological, or no longer serving you as constructive.

Whichever means or method you choose to define the criteria of your own weaknesses or denials is irrespective. What does matter is that at some point any subterfuges or misplaced motivations of your choices will become too overwhelming and your tower begins to crumble.

However, once you are able to be more than your fears, more than your baggage, you too are able to once again join in the Universal realm of being a creator!
